A Presidential Encounter at the 1996 Olympics

In the summer of 1996, the Olympic Games brought much excitement to Atlanta. Thanks to Coach Clark, my swim coach at Marymount, I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at the swimming, diving, and water polo events at the Georgia Tech pool. My all-access pass granted me unique experiences, but one particular evening stands out.

As I walked through the locker room hallway, I suddenly found myself face-to-face with former President Jimmy Carter and his security team. It was a surreal moment; there I was, only a few feet away from a former US President. Summoning my courage, I asked President Carter if I could have a picture with him, and to my delight, he kindly agreed.

I handed someone the only camera I had with me, a pink Kodak camera that belonged to my sister. Standing next to President Carter, we both smiled, ready for the shot. However, the camera chose that exact moment to jam. The photographer tried to click the button again, but there was still no luck. As President Carter prepared to leave, I feared I was about to miss my photo opportunity. I quickly took the camera back, fiddled with it, and somehow managed to unjam it just in time.

Handing the camera back, I heard the president say, “I’ve got to go,” but he graciously stayed long enough for the picture to be taken. It was a brief encounter, yet a moment I’ve never forgotten. Meeting a former U.S. President, especially the only one from Georgia, was an unforgettable highlight of my time volunteering at the Olympics.

Looking back, that moment wasn’t just about meeting a famous figure; it was about kindness and patience.
